CHAPTER 11

BLUE

It seems like Will has me up and off the bed and out of that house before I have time to draw breath. He hustles me down the road, his face set until I dig my heels in and pull us to a stop.

“I didn’t see a route march on my cards this morning,” I gasp.

“How about death by possession?” he snaps. “Did you see that?”

“What?”

He paces away, staring into the distance, and then whirls around. “What the fuck was that?”

“With Evan?”

“No, Blue, when you met Holly Willoughby earlier.”

“Were you sarcastic before Jem, or is this a new thing?”

“Blue!”

I let my heartbeat settle. Its thundering as if I’ve just done a five-mile run. I feel gritty and dirty as if my body isn’t completely my own anymore. I’m also fighting the absurd wish to cry. It’s as if all these emotions have crashed into my brain and I haven’t managed to distance myself from them yet. “I allowed his spirit into me so he could talk to my mind.”

“And let me clarify because this is the bit that boggles my mind. You had never done that before?”

I scuff the pavement. “Not deliberately and not with a new one,” I say quietly. “Tom taught me what to do but it’s not something we’ve covered in depth yet.”

“And you decided to give it a whirl with a newly dead— Sorry. Strike that. A newly murdered spirit who would be unstable?”

“Maybe,” I mumble.

He puts his hand to his ear. “I’m sorry I can’t hear you,” he snaps.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen him this incensed. “Something like that.”

He throws his hands up in the air. “For fuck’s sake, Blue.”

“Wait. Where are you going?”

“Home.”

“Don’t you want to hear what Evan told me?”

“Was that while you were rolling on the dirty mattress, gasping for breath?”

“Well, yes, I suppose so.” I catch up and nudge him. I’m feeling steadier by the second and I reach for my usual flippancy, letting it surround me like a comfortable old blanket. “Was I the prettiest possessed psychic you’ve ever seen? You can tell me. I won’t get a big head.” He shoots me a glare, but his mouth finally quirks.

“It’s all okay, right?” I pause. “So, you have to forgive me. And I know you’re dying to hear what he said.”

He sighs and goes to a stall outside the row of shops we’re passing. He buys two hot chocolates, hands me mine, then perches his arse on a nearby low brick wall and pats the space next to me. “Okay, tell me.”

I sip the drink letting the sweetness ease my jitters. I relate what Evan said, and then we sit silently for a while.

“Angus,” he says thoughtfully. “That’s got to be Angus Reilly.”

“Shit, I’d forgotten him.”

“Yeah, I think he was friends with Evan, or as close as you got with him, which wasn’t much.”

“Well, it sounds like I need to talk to him.” I sigh. “I need that like a hole in the head. He was always drunk when we knew him.
